Using Invariant Manifolds of the Sun-Earth L2 Point for Asteroid Mining Operations

چکیده

The three-body problem is a powerful tool for understanding non-Keplerian orbits. This project focuses on the Circularly Restricted Three-Body Problem (CRTBP), which can be applied to the Sun-Earth and Earth-Moon systems. In particular, we are interested in the Lagrange points of both systems and the Halo orbits that exist about them. These orbits are important for scientific missions, space stations and industrial operations. Transit to these orbits is non-trivial; thus, the method of invariant manifolds will be developed to analyze travel to and from the Lagrange points. This will be extended to analyze asteroid mining at the Sun-Earth L2, and the transition of material from this point to the Earth-Moon system.

Iac-05-c1.6.01 Transfers between the Earth-moon and Sun-earth Systems Using Manifolds and Transit Orbits

The L1 and L2 libration points have been proposed as gateways granting inexpensive access to interplanetary space. The lunar libration points, in conjunction with the collinear libration points in the Sun-Earth system, may also become primary hubs for future human activities in the Earth’s neighborhood. The associated manifold tubes have been introduced by a number of researchers as the basis f...

Dimensionality analysis of subsurface structures in magnetotellurics using different methods (a case study: oil field in Southwest of Iran)

Magnetotelluric (MT) method is an electromagnetic technique that uses the earth natural field to map the electrical resistivity changes in subsurface structures. Because of the high penetration depth of the electromagnetic fields in this method (tens of meters to tens of kilometers), the MT data is used to investigate the shallow to deep subsurface geoelectrical structures and their dimensions....

Design of transfers from Earth-Moon L 1/L2 libration point orbits to a destination object

Kakoi, Masaki Ph.D., Purdue University, May 2015. Design of Transfers from EarthMoon L1/L2 Libration Point Orbits to a Destination Object. Major Professor: Kathleen C. Howell. Within the context of both manned and robotic spaceflight activities, orbits near the Earth-Moon L1 and L2 libration points could support lunar surface operations and serve as staging areas for future missions to near-Ear...

Computer Assisted Existence Proofs of Lyapunov Orbits at L2 and Transversal Intersections of Invariant Manifolds in the Jupiter-Sun PCR3BP

We present a computer assisted proof of existence of a family of Lyapunov orbits which stretches from L2 (the collinear libration point between the primaries) up to half the distance to the smaller primary in the Jupiter-Sun planar circular restricted three body problem. We then focus on a small family of Lyapunov orbits with energies close to comet Oterma and show that their associated invaria...

Low-Energy Impact Dynamics in the Earth – Moon System ⋆

Most of the craters on the surface of the Moon were created by the collision of minor bodies of the Solar System, in particular asteroids coming from the Main Belt as a consequence of different types of resonance. Our aim is to investigate the dynamics of such asteroids, paying special attention on the hyperbolic invariant manifolds associated with the equilibrium point L2 of the Earth – Moon s...
